Jacky and Luc

What a beautiful silhouette! Our first real experience of shooting in the rain was with our dear friends, Jacky and Luc. The couple had rented a beautiful vacation home in Muskoka and invited us over for a few shots for their summer wedding next year. It was challenging, but prompted creativity and lots of garbage bag improvisation. We had so much fun! Too bad I didn't get a chance to take a picture of behind the lens shots. =)

A shot of Jacky's stunning engagement ring.

Anne and Gene

From Niagara to Downtown Toronto, photo sessions with Anne and Gene made us appreciate even more the beauty of living in Canada. This fun loving couple are visiting from the Philippines and decided on an impromptu engagement session while they're here in the city. Though used to tropical climate, Anne and Gene braved the cold and showed their enthusiasm during their photo shoot. Here are some sample shots. I love how the photographs captured their sense of humour and easy-going personalities =)

Jillian and Ricardo

Isn't the fall season such a great time to shoot engagement photos? Jillian and Ricardo are getting married next year and their engagement session couldn't have been timed more perfectly! Here are some samples from their engagement photoshoot.

photobooth love

We are back! This is the view we had to leave behind =(
Anyway, did I tell you our website is up?? It's the longest url you'll ever find but hopefully straightforward enough to help you remember it =) We've had quite a few updates on it already including a password-protected link to client galleries! I'm really excited about the quick turn around and how quickly we were able to set it up, though I'm sure just like anything, there are still a few quirks that need tending. If you run into errors or lag, please give us a shout and we'll try to resolve it as quickly as possible. We want it to be as user friendly and easy to navigate as possible.

Also, we love the idea of a wedding photobooth! It adds a vintage, backyard wedding-y (haha) feel to modern weddings. With cool props and backdrops, it entertains not only the guests, but the photographs make an awesome souvenir/wedding guestbook as well. Look at these fabulous sample shots from DIY photobooths!

A and I are currently looking into setting one up and offering it to our clients in the near future. Tell us, would a photobooth be something you'd be interested in???

relaxing by the beach....

I just realized we left in such haste without actually telling anyone where we're going =). If you haven't already heard (from Facebook!), we are currently vacationing in the beautiful island of Bermuda! We loved Bermuda so much from our last trip in June, we've come back sooner than we planned. It's sooo beautiful here!
We will be back soon to upload pictures, and hopefully get more engagements out of the way before we come back to our real work. *sigh* Wouldn't it be nice if we could just go on vacation all the time???

Day 5: Re-educate

Dreading having to write my 10-paged paper. I have to read through roughly 10-15 scholarly articles and write in APA format. I used to be able to write this in a day! How quickly we forget about school stuff as soon as we left it. To be honest, I'd rather be editing, or baking, or playing with my guitar....that's why today's theme is "re-education".

Anyway, a preview from last week's photo session.

Ann and Gene

Days 3 and 4: Recovery

It seems I needed a day to recover from Day 2. As we left from hot yoga that evening, I actually realized the theme of the day should have been "balance". It was invigorating, and probably just what my body needed. Will definitely go back, but probably not as soon as I hoped.

To feel better about not being able to go back, I baked bread and did some good old kneading...

I love the smell of freshly baked bread. It was perfect in the "melt in your mouth goodness" kind of way <3

I also spent time working on Photography contracts for this weekend's engagement sessions. Editing for the first half is underway. Meanwhile, I worked on some invitation projects and reconnected with Taylor.
A's been experimenting with filters and lighting. Ignore the blurry shot of our classic Kodak and take note instead of the pretty little heart-shaped lights. Love, love, love

Goal for tomorrow: Start my 10-paged paper. I think 4 days is procrastinating enough. Muskoka tomorrow night and Bermuda on Monday. =)

Day 2: Restoration

Today, I planned to do some editing before more starts to pour by the end of the week. Here's a sneak preview of one set.

Going for hot yoga today. Wish me luck!

Day 1: Self-Cleansing

I am off for 22 days! (as if Facebook updates are not enough!) I feel like chronologically planning my days will help me become more productive since there's much to be done on this much needed break. Our weekends are booked with engagement sessions and next week, we'll be relaxing in the beautiful beaches of Bermuda. I did say we want to go back there at some point and I'm just glad it's sooner rather than later.

So, I had lots of things planned for today, even though I was coming off a night shift and hasn't really slept properly to function normally. Here's a view of today's to-do list, thoughts and their respective outcome =)

1. Get a haircut - Since my last cut and colour two months ago left me feeling unsatisfied, I went back to my hairdresser and opted for a shorter length and darker hair colour. My hair was so dry and damaged looking from the highlights and I've been meaning to get it fixed to make it look more natural again. I've been having many bad hair days for quite some time and finally I had the time to go back and have it re-done. I'm happier with my hair now and it looks healthier and not so scraggly as before. Will post pictures soon =)

2. Deliver photobooks - I've had wedding photobooks sitting on our coffee table for quite sometime waiting to be picked up. I'm glad to finally be able to give them to their rightful owners so they can enjoy the photographs we've worked so hard for all summer long.

3. Meet with my bestfriend and good friend/client - There's never a dull moment when you're planning a wedding. Time flew by really fast just going through layers and layers of stationery, decor and details. Plus, we were able to catch up on things. We haven't done this in so long and I sincerely missed spending time with her and my bestfriend.

4. The end of fall - On my way home, I was in awe with the beauty of the leaves on the ground, and the ones fluttering in the air...yet somehow it was also a sad reminder that we're well into the fall season. We have a few more engagements this weekend and I'm afraid it'll be too late then to capture the beauty of it all, with merely empty trees and dried out branches. It was nice today though, not as chilly and wet as the last few days.

5. Thinking of how much I missed the way I used to write - I had so much more time thinking and exploring today, it reminded me of the days I used to actually spend time writing. I had the habit of bringing a notebook with me everywhere I went so I could write random thoughts, funny anecdotes, and other amusing things I find when I'm commuting. I never seem to have much time now with all the things I've been doing. Anyway, it's a good reminder that once in a while, we need to stop and just give ourselves time to catch up and think about things that are happening in our lives. We owe it to ourselves to slow down every once in a while.

Speaking of writing, I'm reposting this -- an old journal entry from the past, back when I had no fear of whether my posts would incriminate or crucify me for being too honest. Enjoy!

Certain Things
Original date of post: January 4, 2005

I always believed that you can only be one type of person. For some, they might say this is the narrow-minded frame of mind because it doesn't leave much room for the possibility of change. I can't hear it enough. Things change. People change. Sure...it happens often enough. We hear comments about people being totally different from what they used to be. I believe however, that no matter what amount of change/transformation you go through, you will remain to be the type of person you were to begin with. As for those people who say they've gone through a major personality transformation, for me that's like saying, you've learned to become less like yourself [your "real" self]. After all, "men are only boys grown tall. Hearts don't change much after all."

Judging is the easiest job in the world. Reality TV can't be a better example. We watch it because we enjoy watching other people's miseries. Their tears become triggers for a laughing fit. As sickening as it sounds, their idiosyncracies become great sources of entertainment. Go to the mall. Sit somewhere and soon enough, you'd find someone to judge. The irony is, you feel safe because you really don't know these people. Whatever snap judgment you impose upon them are really not likely to make any difference especially if you're not likely to run across them again. In fact, don't even go far. The subway is a perfect place. You're sitting there, alone with your thoughts. If you're lucky enough, you're stuck with the same people who are getting off in the same station as you are. You see something funny. Something trivial and you can't help but judge. It's a really convenient way to pass time. And of course, it becomes really handy when you're meeting people for the first time because first impressions do last.

I'm guilty for passing judgment. As much as I try to be objective about everything, I do have the tendency to make a snap decision when I meet someone new. I have low tolerance for narcissists, egotistics, people who are obsessive, people who are superficial [I have a long list, but I'd skip it]. I believe you can pretty much tell from your first conversation, the kind of person he/she is just by listening to how he/she talks, the way the person put words together and also by observing his/her non-verbal behaviours. I think the hours I spent people-watching is actually starting to pay off.

He was the type --- the type who had the capacity to break my heart in 4939658658 little pieces. He was the type that could make you want to listen to Jann Arden's "Insensitive" over and over again [especially the chorus part]. The funny thing was, I knew that he was going to be a mistake and the best thing I could possibly do was run away, but like a moth to a flame, I was drawn to him almost unconsciously. And you know what they say, if you sit too close to the fire, you're likely to burn yourself. The light flickering in the darkness, offered you to come closer, mesmerized you until it's too late to disengage. The idea of having him close to me was like finding the safest haven on earth. You just never want to leave.
Of course, my obsessive, over-analyzing self have gone over this idea a million times. I've accepted that this wasn't going to be a permanent thing. It was an option for boredom. It's like getting a new hobby. Or harbouring a deep, new secret that strangely brings much elation -- a feeling I haven't had in a really long time. I've always been the type of person who thinks twice before jumping into the pool. But I thought, maybe I can be the type of person who can jump into the pool without second-guessing myself. I can be spontaneous. I can jump without knowing how deep the pool is, or without any guarantee of life support. Maybe, I don't always have to test the waters with my feet before jumping into cold water. It would be like a leap of faith that would free my mind from all worries. I can make plans without checking my calendar first. I can do the things I want to do instead of the things I have to do.

I was wrong, of course. I am just one type of person. I second-guess myself after I've second-guessed myself. I like testing the waters before jumping into cold water. I like knowing I have a safe place I can run to when I'm in trouble or need some comfort. I like planning my days and knowing that I am not going through life in a blindfold. I like setting goals, making lists, crossing lists, keeping track of what I have achieved and are yet to achieve. I like knowing that I'm not floating aimlessly in thin air. Of course, I don't always feel like this every day. I have self-doubts every now and then but I always leave a little room for certainty. For there are things that are certain in this life. And the type of person I am --- I can't be more certain about that.

playing with textures

I've been experimenting with textures. I love how it adds a dramatic feel to simple photographs. These pictures were not bad to begin with but the added texture changes the feel of them and make it even better.
before

after
A little bit of texture around Mika's beautiful face makes her even more bright eyed.
This chrysanthemum is stunning.
....and dramatic here.
and this is just a product of boredom =)

i'd still say yes to you again...

This day in 2007, A asked me to marry him. And I said "yes!" =)

It seems like a blur now. Although I remember how surprised I was when he did. Our relationship up to that point seemed automatic. It's like we knew we were headed that way anyway, and no formal proposals of such magnitude were necessary. In fact, I just sort of assumed we will eventually get married, without him actually asking, without a pricey diamond ring. I was okay with it; I love him and that was all that mattered.

The days leading up to it should have been clues, but my normal oblivious self did not pick up the hints. The day before we were having a random dinner at Swiss Chalet and he joked, "What if I proposed to you right here, right now?" I remember thinking it must be some kind of a joke. How embarrasing it must be if he did it in front of all these people only to find out he was planning the same scheme all along. He was planning for a few weeks, with the help of our closest friends. He even got help from my girl friends when picking out the ring. Thank God, my friends have good taste =)

It was the perfect day.

Happy (engagement) anniversary, A! Years from now, I'll be telling the same story over and over again, and the answer will always be the same. Because I couldn't have been luckier and grateful for having you in my life.

"...because I'd still say yes to you again,
my darling for you, I'd do it all again...
yes, I'd still say yes to you again,
my darling for you, I'd do it over and over again...."

yes, i'm a gleek =P

....in case you were wondering =)

I can't believe I'm missing tonight's episode of Glee because of work! Somebody PVR this for me!!

Although, it will be on Rogers on Demand a few days from now (but I can't wait a few days!!!)
Oh well, and you thought I had bigger problems =P

On a brighter note, all wedding photo-editing is done and the photobooks are in printing. I can't wait to see the hardcopies of the fruits of our labour!

Check out these photobooks!

egg-in-the-hole

I'm big on breakfast recently. We haven't been really eating proper breakfast so I've been looking for ways to spruce up and make breakfast more exciting. It is, after all, the most important meal of the day or so my mom would say.

A really loved this. Again, credits to The Pioneer Woman =)

Still editing, and dreaming for a vacation which I hope is coming soon.

Happy First Day of Fall =)

mmm cinnamon!

It's been awhile since my last food post, so this one is long overdue! We're repainting our tiny place and so our diet has been reduced to easy to eat meals, lots of take out and sometimes not so appetizing meals, hence the lack of pictures. Well, this doesn't really qualify a meal but it's the first time in a long time that I actually cracked open a recipe book, followed measurements and made my own ground nutmeg. I tell you, this one took longer to make than eat =)

This is French breakfast puffs -- straight from page 66 of "The Pioneer Woman Cooks"

I guess in theory, anything made of cinnamon sugar is a sure hit! I had some real nutmeg from our Grenada trip...the actual nut/seed? not the ground ones and I wasn't really sure if I prepared it right haha. I cracked the shell open and used my small grater as if to zest a lemon. Occasionally there are bigger nutmeg pieces, I guess as a residue of my uneven grater. It came out okay though. Love the smell of nutmeg and cinnamon that filled our newly painted kitchen =)

I'm dying for a vacation! We've been so busy this summer that it came and went and now it's cold again *sigh*. At least there's the colours of fall to look forward to.

Hope to take some nature shots on our next impromptu trip!

textures, textures!

The thing about taking time off in editing is it helps open up my mind to the possibility of new perspectives. I find that sometimes, though it seems there's only one way to look and see a photograph, leaving it alone and coming back to it after awhile allowed me to see it in a different way. I know this doesn't seem to make much sense, but it works for me, and I'm glad I'm able to view things this way, instead of blaming it to procrastination. So in the middle of editing, we are taking short breaks. Enough that we got so bored, we're actually repainting our living room. Yup, we're that type of people, the can't-sit-still-without-doing-anything people. I guess in many ways, that's a good thing =)

Love these two re-edits! The product of new perspectives =) Cheers!

Thanks August Empress for the cool background!
